Clade size is not always an appropriate measure of diversification.
Lanfear et al. [1] reported an interesting association between mutation rate and net diversification in birds that had not been as evident in other groups of organisms. More specifically, their data showed a correlation between synonymous substitution rate and net diversification that cannot be explained by selection, effective population size, or some plausibly covarying life-history trait. To...
متن کاملGreedy Recommending Is Not Always Optimal
Recommender systems help users to find objects or documents on web sites. In many cases it is not easy to know in advance by whom and for what purpose a web site will be used. This makes it difficult for many applications to define adequate recommendations in advance. Therefore recommendations are typically generated dynamically. Recommendations are based on analysis of user data (social filter...
متن کاملDiscussion of “Is Optimal Monetary Policy Always Optimal?”∗
A burgeoning part of the monetary policy design literature posits that optimal monetary policy is the solution to a constrained optimization problem where the monetary authority has the discretion to minimize a social welfare function, taking the economy and other policies as given. In their paper “Is Optimal Monetary Policy Always Optimal?” Troy Davig and Refet Gurkaynak (henceforth, DG) argue...
متن کاملIs the Detection of Odontoma Always Comfortable? A Case Report
Abstract Odontomas are the most common type of odontogenic tumors, which are often discovered by routine radiographic images or after taking films to determine the main cause of the tooth failure eruption or malocclusion. The present study aimed to describe a case of misdiagnosis and similarity of foreign body density in the radiographic appearance to odontoma in a 13-yea...
متن کاملOptimal Bounds on Theta-Graphs: More is not Always Better
We present tight upper and lower bounds on the spanning ratio of a large family of θ-graphs. We show that θgraphs with 4k+2 cones (k ≥ 1 and integer) have a spanning ratio of 1 + 2 sin(θ/2), where θ is 2π/(4k + 2). We also show that θ-graphs with 4k + 4 cones have spanning ratio at least 1 + 2 tan(θ/2) + 2 tan(θ/2), where θ is 2π/(4k + 4). This is somewhat surprising since, for equal values of ...
